Utilizing the REP framework for health care interventions, the need to consider stages of implementation is clear. Implementation requires intervention education and technical assistance, while the maintenance and evolution phase requires the establishment of sustainable practices. The preimplementation phase includes gathering community opinions and pilot testing the intervention. In the preconditions phase, needs and implementation barriers are identified. The Replicating Effective Programs (REP) framework consists of four phases: preconditions, preimplementation, implementation, and maintenance and evolution. As a solution, we introduce an implementation framework for app evaluation that offers an evidence-based, practical, and impactful process to utilize across all medical fields in evaluating apps.Ĭhallenges with current app evaluation tools and websites can be best understood from an implementation science perspective. According to industry reports, there may be over 300,000 health-related apps, which compared to the 20,000 prescription drug products approved for marketing by the Food and Drug Administration, represents the scope of the challenge in helping both consumers and providers find, evaluate, and use the right apps.
